Overview
Mount Elgon can be climbed throughout the year, although the best conditions are usually experienced between December and March. Temperatures around the crater can become extremely cold, with snow and hail occasionally occurring at higher altitudes. All climbers are required to be accompanied by a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger, which can be arranged at the park gate or booked in advance through the KWS headquarters in Nairobi.
During dry weather, it is possible to reach the summit and return within a single day if you are able to drive close to the upper hiking section of the mountain. Visitors are advised to carry warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking footwear suitable for mountain conditions. Although altitude sickness is generally less severe than on Mount Kenya, spending a night on the mountain can help with acclimatization and make the trek more comfortable. For those without a 4WD vehicle, the climb can be completed at a more relaxed pace, typically taking three days to ascend and two days to descend.
The most common access point to the park is through Chorlim Gate, followed by a drive through the park to the end of the road at Koroborte (3,580 m), where a campsite and water are available. From Koroborte, it takes approximately three hours to hike to Koitoboss Summit. Some routes may occasionally be closed, so it is advisable to confirm route conditions and accessibility with KWS before traveling.
